GlucoSpike vs Yuka
Yuka tells you how "healthy" a product is overall.
GlucoSpike tells you how it will hit your blood sugar, and does the same for the meals that have no barcode.
Yuka is a popular scanner that grades packaged food and cosmetics from 0 to 100. If you have prediabetes, PCOS, or insulin resistance, the number you actually need is a different one: will this raise my blood sugar, and by how much? GlucoSpike's barcode scanner answers that for free, and the app does it for your whole plate from a photo.

The one-paragraph verdict
Use Yuka ifβ¦
- β’You want to check additives in packaged food
- β’You want to scan shampoo, sunscreen, and makeup too
- β’You care about organic certification as part of the score
- β’Blood sugar is not your main reason for scanning
Use GlucoSpike ifβ¦
- βYou have prediabetes, PCOS, or insulin resistance
- βYou want a scan to tell you the glucose impact, not a general grade
- βYou want your dinner, lunch, and takeout scored, not just packages
- βYou want to know which ingredient is driving the rise, and the swap
What Yuka is built for
Yuka is a widely used app, and it is fair to be clear about what it does. Its job is a general health grade for anything with a barcode.
A 0 to 100 product grade
Every product gets one number built from three parts: nutritional quality via Nutri-Score (60%), additives (30%), and organic certification (10%). A high-risk additive caps the score at 49.
Food and cosmetics
Yuka scans personal care products as well as food, flagging ingredients it considers risky. That is a category GlucoSpike does not cover at all.
Independent and mostly free
Yuka says it takes no money from brands. Scanning is free, and an optional Premium (search, offline mode, dietary filters) is pay-what-you-want at about $10 to $20 a year.
The GlucoSpike view: a general health grade and a blood sugar verdict are two different measurements. Additives and organic status make up 40% of a Yuka score, and neither one changes how fast a food raises your glucose. If blood sugar is why you are scanning, you want the score that measures blood sugar.
Five places GlucoSpike goes further for blood sugar.
Yuka's focus is overall product quality. GlucoSpike's focus is glucose impact. For someone managing prediabetes, PCOS, or insulin resistance, these are the differences that show up day to day.
Clean label is not the same as low spike
A product with one organic ingredient and no additives can do very well on a rubric that rewards short, clean labels. Puffed rice cakes, dried fruit, and organic juice can all fit that description and still raise blood sugar quickly. GlucoSpike's GS Score looks at what drives a glucose rise (the carbs, and the fiber, protein, and fat that slow them down) rather than additives or certification.
Meals, not just packages
Yuka needs a barcode. Your Tuesday dinner, a burrito bowl, or a plate at a family barbecue does not have one. GlucoSpike scores any meal from a photo, with a Minor, Moderate, or Major Impact verdict and a predicted 2.5-hour response curve. Already ate? Type or say it with Quick Log, or just tell the AI coach in chat.
Which ingredient, and what to swap
A single 0 to 100 grade tells you a product is better or worse. GlucoSpike colors every ingredient in a meal green, amber, or red, names the one driving the rise, and suggests the specific swap that lowers the score. For packaged food, it points you to what to grab instead.
A pattern across the week
Scanning one product at a time is a snapshot. After three or more meals, GlucoSpike's Weekly Insight Card shows your average impact, the trend against last week, and the trigger that keeps repeating. That is how one-off checks turn into habits.
Your own readings, kept away from the AI
If you own a meter or a CGM, you can log readings in GlucoSpike (mg/dL or mmol/L) and see each one next to the meal it followed. Readings are never sent to the AI, and GlucoSpike never labels a reading normal, high, or low. That call belongs to you and your doctor. Yuka does not track readings at all.

Want to see the difference on something from your pantry? Try GlucoSpike's free barcode scanner. No app install required.
From the grocery aisle to the dinner plate
You are standing in the snack aisle holding a box of organic honey-oat granola bars. Short ingredient list, nothing artificial. You scan it with GlucoSpike:
Major Impact.
The oats and honey carry most of the carbs, and there is not much fiber or protein to slow them down.
Grab instead: a nut-based bar with more protein and fiber, or pair this one with a cheese stick.
That evening you photograph a plate of spaghetti and meatballs with garlic bread. Same scoring, same rubric: the garlic bread is the red one, and dropping it brings the plate down to Moderate. Three meals in, a weekly card shows which of your regular choices keeps coming back red. The snack and the dinner are scored on the same scale, so your week adds up to one picture.

Two different questions
Yuka asks
"Is this product good for me, in general?"
Nutrition, additives, and organic status rolled into one grade, for food and for what you put on your skin. A reasonable question for a lot of shoppers.
GlucoSpike asks
"What will this do to my blood sugar?"
One verdict on one rubric, for a packaged snack or a full plate, with the ingredient responsible and one next step. The question people with prediabetes are actually asking at the shelf.
The takeaway: if you want an additive and cosmetics checker, Yuka does that job. If you are scanning because of prediabetes, PCOS, or insulin resistance, GlucoSpike gives you the blood sugar answer for free at the shelf, and extends it to every meal you eat.
What GlucoSpike users describe
These are reviews of the app from people who wanted to know which foods, specifically, were affecting their blood sugar.
βI have prediabetes, and GlucoSpike has helped me learn what a balanced meal really looks like. It is more accurate than other apps for calories and protein, and the gentle tips keep me motivated without guilt.β
Mich
GlucoSpike user Β· Prediabetes
The job: learning what a balanced meal is
A product grade tells you about one item. Mich learned from whole meals scored the same way, again and again, until the pattern was hers.
βGlucoSpike gives me the Libre Assist-like environment I need, without the CGM cost. It tells me exactly which foods are causing my spikes before they happen. It's part of my ecosystem.β
Darryl
New York, NY
The job: knowing before, not after
"Which foods are causing my spikes" is a blood sugar question. He wanted the answer at the moment of choosing, which is exactly when a scan or a photo happens.
βHelps me plan meals for my diabetic husband. I love how it shows past choices and makes it easy to repeat what works. Truly a great app that helps me so very much!β
Julia
Flint, MI
The job: repeating what worked
She goes back to meals that already went well. That needs a history of whole meals, not a list of individual products.
βAfter long COVID, I needed something simple and effective. GlucoSpike nails it. The meal patterns, reminders, and focus on energy impact keep me on track daily.β
Dan
Seattle, WA
The job: simple enough to keep doing
The useful unit for him is what repeats across a week. A simple loop of snap, score, and swap is one he can sustain.
How GlucoSpike works
No CGM. No strict diet. Barcode or photo.
Scan it or snap it
Scan a barcode for packaged food (free, even on the web), or take a photo of your plate before you eat. No barcode and no photo? Type or say it with Quick Log, or tell the AI coach in chat.
Get your Impact Score
Every product and meal is rated Minor, Moderate, or Major Impact against the same rubric. Meals get a predicted 2.5-hour curve and every ingredient colored green, amber, or red, with specific swaps to lower the score.
Learn your playbook
After 3+ meals, your Weekly Insight Card shows your average Impact Score, the trend against last week, and your most repeated spike trigger. Your own data, showing your pattern.

Where these claims come from
A comparison written by one of the two apps is worth reading skeptically. Here is what sits behind each claim on this page.
How Yuka scores food
The 60 / 30 / 10 split (Nutri-Score nutritional quality, additives, organic certification) and the 49-point cap for a high-risk additive are from Yuka's own help center. Its scoring method does not mention glycemic index or blood sugar.
Yuka: How are food products rated? βWhy a clean label can still spike
Blood sugar rises mainly with the amount and type of carbohydrate, and is slowed by fiber, protein, and fat. Additives and organic certification do not change that. This is a statement about what each score measures, not a claim about any particular product's Yuka rating.
The method behind GlucoSpike's prediction βThe barcode database is not ours
GlucoSpike's product data comes from Open Food Facts, a public nonprofit food database of 4M+ products across 150+ countries, independently maintained and auditable by anyone. Coverage is uneven, and a missing product returns no verdict rather than a guess. You can photograph the nutrition label instead.
Open Food Facts, the source itself βReadings never reaching the AI
This is a documented data-flow claim: meal photos are sent to the model; blood-glucose readings and Patterns are not.
Exactly what is sent, and what is not βThe pricing comparison
Yuka's scanning is free, with Premium offered as pay-what-you-want at roughly $10, $15, or $20 a year. GlucoSpike's barcode scanner is free; the full app is $39.99/year after a 7-day free trial with no credit card. Both were checked in September 2026.
Yuka on the App Store βYuka's features and pricing described on this page were checked in September 2026 and may have changed since. GlucoSpike is not affiliated with Yuka.
Common questions
What is the difference between GlucoSpike and Yuka?
Both scan barcodes and give a score, but they measure different things. Yuka grades overall product quality from 0 to 100 (Nutri-Score 60%, additives 30%, organic 10%) and also covers cosmetics. GlucoSpike scores how a product or a full meal will hit your blood sugar, colors each ingredient green, amber, or red, and shows a weekly pattern.
Is Yuka good for prediabetes or blood sugar?
It is a useful general-health scanner, but its score is not built to measure glucose impact. 40% of it (additives and organic status) has no direct effect on a glucose rise, so a clean-label product can score well and still raise blood sugar quickly. If blood sugar is the question, GlucoSpike scores that directly.
Is the GlucoSpike barcode scanner free like Yuka?
Yes. It is free with no subscription, runs on the web with no install, and covers 4M+ products via Open Food Facts. The full app, with meal photo scoring and the weekly pattern, is $39.99/year after a 7-day free trial with no credit card.
Can Yuka score a meal that does not have a barcode?
No, it works on packaged products. GlucoSpike scores home-cooked and restaurant meals from a photo, with a Minor, Moderate, or Major Impact verdict, a predicted 2.5-hour curve, and the ingredient driving the rise.
Can I use Yuka and GlucoSpike together?
Yes. Yuka covers cosmetics and additive concerns, which GlucoSpike does not score. GlucoSpike covers the blood sugar question for packaged food and full meals. If prediabetes, PCOS, or insulin resistance is why you scan, GlucoSpike's free scanner answers that on its own.
Does GlucoSpike need a CGM or a glucose meter?
No. It predicts impact from a photo or a barcode, so there is no hardware and no prescription. If you do have a meter or a CGM, you can log your own readings and see them next to the meal they followed. Readings are never sent to the AI, and GlucoSpike never labels a reading normal, high, or low.
