Why muscle matters more than cardio

There is a detail in the physiology that deserves to be much better known. When a muscle contracts, it can pull glucose out of your bloodstream through a pathway that does not require insulin at all.

Read that again in the context of chapter 1. The problem in insulin resistance is that the insulin signal is getting through poorly. Muscle contraction opens a second door that does not depend on that signal working well. This is why movement helps people whose insulin signalling is impaired, and why it helps immediately rather than only over months.

It also reframes muscle mass. Muscle is not decorative and it is not only about strength. It is the largest place your body puts glucose. More of it means more storage capacity and, generally, better insulin sensitivity.

The post-meal walk

The highest-return, lowest-effort intervention in this entire handbook is walking for ten to fifteen minutes after you eat. Not a workout. A walk.

Timing is what makes it work. A note on fasted walking

Fasted exercise has a reputation as the more virtuous option. For blood sugar specifically, it is often the opposite.

Exercising with nothing in your system prompts your body to release stored glucose to fuel the work, so a fasted morning walk can nudge your reading up before it comes down. Nothing has gone wrong when this happens, and it does not mean the walk was pointless. But if the goal is flattening a meal response, a walk after you eat does the job you actually wanted.
